AMBASSADOR ELIZABETH FRAWLEY BAGLEY JOINS MANATT JONES GLOBAL STRATEGIES

WASHINGTON, D.C. and LOS ANGELES, January 28, 2002 – Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP and Manatt Jones Global Strategies, LLC announced today that former U.S. Ambassador to Portugal Elizabeth Frawley Bagley will join the Firm as Counsel and the international consulting Firm as Senior Managing Director on February 1. Ambassador Bagley has experience in diplomacy, global trade, U.S. government relations and foreign government and corporate representation.

Ambassador Bagley most recently acted as Senior Advisor to former Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright, establishing and heading the Office of Media Programming Acquisition for the newly independent Balkan states and functioning as a Senate liaison for NATO Enlargement. From 1994-97, she served as U.S. Ambassador to Portugal, where she received the Grand Cross of Prince Henry the Navigator, the President of Portugal’s highest civilian commendation, and meritorious awards from the Portuguese Navy and Air Force.

“I was familiar with the Firm’s reputation from my association with Chuck Manatt at the National Endowment for Democracy and from working with Jim Jones at the Center for National Policy,” said Ambassador Bagley. “The opportunity to work with the Firm’s global consulting business is tailor-made for my areas of interest: building relationships between government and business and facilitating international trade.”

Ambassador Bagley served as Foreign Policy Advisor to the Drafting Committee for the 1992 Democratic Party platform and later as Diplomatic Liaison to the 1992 Clinton-Gore presidential campaign. She also served as Foreign Policy Advisor to the 2000 Gore presidential campaign. During the Carter Administration, she held the position of Congressional Liaison Officer in the Department of State and was Special Assistant to Ambassador Sol Linowitz for the Camp David Accords. She was Congressional Liaison to the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe.

“Elizabeth has been involved in politics and public service most of her life, establishing friendships, diplomatic ties and business relationships around the globe, particularly in Europe,” said ManattJones Co-Chair James R. Ambassador Bagley is on the Boards of Directors for the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs, the Council on Foreign Relations, the American Ireland Fund, the Council of American Ambassadors, the Association of Diplomatic Studies and Training, and Vital Voices International. She is presently serving as Deputy Director to the Democracy Task Force, as well as the Public Diplomacy Task Force, for the Council on Foreign Relations.

A 1974 cum laude graduate of Regis College in Weston, Mass., with a B.A. in French and Spanish, Ambassador Bagley received her J.D. in international law from Georgetown University Law School in 1987. She also studied at the University of Strasbourg Law School and Universite de Dijon in France, the University of Vienna Law School in Austria, and Universidad de Deusto in Spain. Ambassador Bagley is admitted to the District of Columbia and Massachusetts bars.
